What is the process in getting on a flight ?

im 18 and im going on holiday to egypt tomorrow and im flying from gatwick north terminal. i have one of the new chipped passports whereas the rest of my family dont so i can go through the new scan gates whereas my family will have to queue. new rules state that passengers are allowed to take 1 lighter onto an aircraft with them but they must keep it on there person and declare it with the liquids in clear plastic bags. i dont reallly want my dad knowing i smoke and it will be obvious if i have a lighter so i wanna know really where the baggage checks is in relation to the passport control so i know if ill be able to have my bags checked without my dad seeing the lighter as he'll be going through the normal passport control.
