Would you say a plastic tampon applicator is easier to use than cardboard?

...especially for a virgin who's pretty tight down there & never tried a tampon? I tried a cardboard one & was able to get in an inch or two but it was too painful, so I took it back out.. Going to buy some plastic ones think that may be better? thx for help!
